What are the main benefits of Avast Essential Business Security?

Avast Essential Business Security is the entry tier of Avast Small Business Solutions, an endpoint protection suite for Windows PCs, Mac computers and Windows servers. It replaced Avast Business Antivirus, which many buyers still search for under the old name, and it runs either under the cloud-based Avast Business Hub or standalone on each device.

Same Detection Engine – Identical antivirus components across Essential, Premium and Ultimate.
No Console Obligation – Small sites can skip the cloud platform entirely.
Mail Server Scanning – On-premises Exchange gets its own scanning component.
Remote Access Shield – Blocks unwanted remote connections to workstations and servers.
Network Discovery – Finds unprotected devices before rollout from the Hub.
Upgrade Path – Move to Premium or Ultimate without changing vendor.

Which company size is Avast Essential Business Security suitable for?

This is a prevention product for organisations whose security work is still handled by an owner, a single IT generalist or an external service provider. It stops being sufficient at the point where a customer, an auditor or a regulator asks you to reconstruct what an attacker did, because that requires detection and response tooling this tier does not contain.

Does Avast Essential Business Security meet the requirements of Swiss cybersecurity legislation?

The Swiss reporting duty does not apply to every company: the revised Information Security Act obliges operators of critical infrastructure to report cyberattacks to the Federal Office for Cybersecurity (BACS) within 24 hours of discovery, and most small trading, service or manufacturing firms fall outside that group. Where the duty does apply, the part Avast Essential Business Security supports is early detection: the Avast Business Hub records which device raised which detection and when, sends alerts by email or dashboard, and produces reports you can export as evidence of the point in time you became aware. What it does not support is the harder half of a 24-hour report, namely determining how the attacker entered, which systems were touched and whether data left the company, because this tier contains no endpoint detection and response component and therefore no process timeline or root-cause view. It also provides no log forwarding into a central evidence archive, so anything beyond device and threat status has to be collected by hand. Companies subject to the reporting duty should treat this product as the prevention and alerting layer and plan a separate route for investigation and evidence. This is general product information and not legal advice; whether your organisation is subject to the reporting obligation should be clarified with qualified legal counsel.

Does Avast Essential Business Security meet the requirements of European cybersecurity legislation?

No software product creates NIS 2 compliance, because the directive addresses organisational risk management rather than the presence of any single tool. NIS 2 requires member states to impose measures in categories including risk analysis and information system security policies, incident handling, business continuity and backup management, supply chain security, vulnerability handling and disclosure, cyber hygiene practices and training, cryptography, access control, and multi-factor authentication. Avast Essential Business Security contributes to cyber hygiene through malware protection on workstations and Windows servers, to incident handling through detection and alerting, and to asset management through network discovery and a device inventory in the Business Hub. It does not contribute to business continuity and backup, since Cloud Backup is a separate add-on, nor to cryptography, access control or multi-factor authentication, none of which exist in the Avast Business line. Vulnerability handling is also absent at this tier, because Patch Management belongs to Ultimate Business Security or is bought as an add-on, and staff training is not part of the product at all.

What should you know about official assessments of Avast?

Two regulators have issued final decisions against the vendor, and both concern data privacy rather than product security. On 22 February 2024 the United States Federal Trade Commission announced an action against Avast Limited, and finalised the order on 27 June 2024: Avast pays 16.5 million US dollars, is prohibited from selling or licensing web browsing data for advertising purposes, must delete the data transferred to its former subsidiary Jumpshot, and must run a privacy programme subject to independent assessment for twenty years. Separately, the Czech Office for Personal Data Protection imposed a fine of 351 million Czech crowns, roughly 13.9 million euros, in a decision that became final in 2024, finding that Avast unlawfully transferred pseudonymised browsing histories of around 100 million users to Jumpshot during 2019 while describing the data to users as anonymous. Both decisions remain in force. Avast closed Jumpshot in 2020, has stated that it takes user privacy seriously and has disagreed with the Czech authority's conclusions, maintaining that its handling was lawful. The findings relate to browsing data collected from consumer products and browser extensions in the 2014 to 2020 period, and independent laboratory results for the business endpoint product are a separate matter: AV-Comparatives granted an Approved Business Security Product award in July 2024 and AV-Test certified the corporate endpoint protection for Windows in 2025. Practically, this matters most if you sell into public sector contracts or answer supply chain questionnaires that ask whether a supplier has been subject to regulatory findings, since you will have to disclose and explain them. For a company whose main concern is malware prevention on its own devices, the decisions have no operational effect. The decision is yours.

Does Avast Essential Business Security help with security questionnaires from large customers?

Partly, and it is worth knowing in advance which boxes it leaves empty. It answers the questions about anti-malware protection being deployed on all workstations and servers, about that protection being centrally configured through enforced policies, about alerting when a detection occurs, about a maintained inventory of managed devices, and about scanning on an on-premises Exchange mail server. It does not answer the questions about endpoint detection and response, about a managed detection service or security operations centre, about automated patching of operating systems and third-party applications, about full-disk encryption and central key recovery, about multi-factor authentication, about backup and restore testing, about mobile device management, or about log retention periods, because none of these functions exist in this tier. To close the patching gap, upgrading the same family to Ultimate Business Security is normally cheaper and less work than introducing a second vendor, since the agent, console and policies stay the same; Cloud Backup and Premium Remote Control are available as add-ons on the same platform. Encryption, multi-factor authentication and detection and response are not available anywhere in the Avast Business line, so those answers have to come from other tooling regardless of which tier you buy.

What is the difference between Essential, Premium and Ultimate Business Security?

The single most decisive point is that all three tiers run the identical endpoint protection engine with the same antivirus components, so paying more does not buy better malware detection. What you buy is additional services around that engine: Premium Business Security adds Web Control, USB Protection and a personal VPN, while Ultimate Business Security adds Patch Management on top. A second practical difference is operational: the Avast Business Hub is optional for Essential and Premium but mandatory for Ultimate, because Patch Management only works as a managed service. The third is platform coverage, since the personal VPN and Patch Management are Windows-only and have no macOS equivalent.

Which limitations should you know before buying?

The constraints on this product are platform-based rather than geographic: no feature is restricted to particular countries, so Swiss and European buyers get the same functional scope as buyers elsewhere. Platform coverage is uneven inside the supported systems, however. Several components are Windows workstation features only and are not available on Windows Server, including the Firewall, Behavior Shield, Network Inspector, Webcam Shield and Real Site, so a server does not receive the same layered protection as a laptop. Linux endpoints are outside this product entirely and require the separate Avast Business Antivirus for Linux, and the Business Hub cannot manage mobile devices at all, which surprises buyers who expect a single console for everything. The limitations that most often trigger a follow-up purchase are the missing patch management, the absence of any backup function, and the lack of endpoint detection and response, which is not available in any tier of this family.

Frequently asked questions about Avast Essential Business Security

Can it be used with the Avast Business On-Premise console?

No. Avast states that Essential Business Security works only with the cloud-based Avast Business Hub, and the On-Premise console is not an option. If your policy requires a management server inside your own network, this product line will not satisfy it.

Who is the data controller for customers in Europe?

Avast names Avast Software s.r.o. in Prague, Czech Republic as the controller for users in the European Economic Area, unless a contract stipulates otherwise, and the wider group is owned by Gen Digital Inc. This is the detail procurement departments usually ask for when a questionnaire covers sub-processors and group structure.
