Windows 11 Enterprise is Microsoft's business operating system edition for centrally managed company PCs that need stronger credential and data protection.
Enterprise is the top tier of Microsoft's regular Windows 11 business line and is built on the same code base as the other editions. It contains everything found in Windows 11 Pro and adds operating-system features that Microsoft reserves for organisations with a central IT department, among them Credential Guard, Personal Data Encryption and extended control over the Windows user interface. It is designed for PC fleets that IT configures and updates through policy.
Within the family, this edition sits above Pro and next to a specialised relative, Enterprise LTSC, which deliberately leaves out regular feature updates for fixed-purpose machines. Standard Enterprise follows the normal annual feature release cycle, so employees receive new Windows capabilities while administrators decide when those changes reach the desktop. Its main job is to reduce the attack surface of company PCs and keep them consistent.
For employees, a PC running Enterprise looks like any other Windows 11 machine and runs the same applications. The difference appears on the administrator's side. A typical workflow starts in Microsoft Intune or Group Policy, where IT defines security baselines, update rings and application rules once and then applies them to hundreds or thousands of devices.
The edition also earns its place on shared and single-purpose devices. Shell Launcher and the Unified Write Filter allow a reception terminal, a warehouse station or a shop-floor PC to run one approved application and return to a clean state after every restart. Security teams in regulated sectors such as finance, healthcare or public administration usually gain the most, because the extra protections address exactly the credential and data risks their auditors examine.
Credential Guard uses virtualization-based security to keep sign-in secrets in an isolated area of memory that the regular operating system cannot read. This counters pass-the-hash and pass-the-ticket attacks, a common way for intruders to spread from one compromised PC. Personal Data Encryption works alongside BitLocker: it links the encryption of a user's files to their Windows Hello for Business sign-in, so those files remain unreadable until that person has actually signed in.
The Windows Experience policies let administrators lock down consumer-oriented features, tips and suggested content more tightly than Pro permits, which keeps managed desktops predictable. Organizational messages give IT a channel to place notices directly in Windows notifications and on the taskbar, for example to announce maintenance windows. Each annual feature update of Enterprise is also supported for 36 months instead of the 24 months that apply to Pro, which gives IT teams an extra year to test and roll out new versions.
Windows 11 Pro suits small and medium businesses that need BitLocker, Group Policy and domain or Microsoft Entra ID join, but not credential isolation or deeper desktop lockdown. Microsoft offers Enterprise in two packages: E3 contains the operating system described here together with cloud-based management benefits, while E5 adds Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Plan 2, a service for detecting and investigating attacks that have already passed the first line of defence. Enterprise LTSC is a separate variant for medical systems, industrial controllers or similar specialised devices whose feature set must stay frozen and which should receive only security and quality fixes.
Enterprise is an operating system, not an application bundle, so it does not include Microsoft 365 Apps such as Word, Excel or Outlook. Several of its most valuable capabilities depend on surrounding infrastructure: Personal Data Encryption requires Windows Hello for Business on devices joined to Microsoft Entra ID, and the experience and lockdown policies are delivered through Group Policy or a management platform like Intune. A single standalone PC without such tooling gains little over Pro.
Is Enterprise the same as the LTSC edition?
No. Standard Enterprise receives the annual feature updates that bring new Windows functions, while LTSC is limited to security and quality fixes over a long period. LTSC is intended for fixed-purpose equipment rather than general office PCs.
Will employees notice a difference compared with Pro?
Hardly, because both editions share one code base and interface. The additional value lies in security, policy and management functions that IT controls in the background.
Is antivirus protection built in?
Yes, Microsoft Defender Antivirus and the Windows Security app are part of the installed system. Endpoint detection and response through Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Plan 2 is a separate cloud service that Microsoft attaches to the E5 package.
