Windows 11 Pro is Microsoft's business edition of its desktop operating system, built for professionals and small companies that manage and protect their own PCs.
Windows 11 Pro is the business-oriented edition of Microsoft's current client operating system. It includes every feature of Windows 11 Home and adds the tools that companies, freelancers and IT administrators use to secure and manage PCs: BitLocker drive encryption, Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, a Remote Desktop host and the Local Group Policy Editor.
Within the Windows 11 family, this edition sits between Home, which is aimed at private users, and Enterprise and Education, which Microsoft provides to larger organisations and schools under separate agreements. Pro is designed for small and medium-sized businesses: a PC running it can join a classic Active Directory domain or Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft's cloud directory, and then be configured centrally. It still remains a complete desktop system with the same interface and applications as any other Windows 11 PC.
Working on the Pro edition looks much like working on any Windows PC, with email, a browser and business applications. The difference lies in the background. An employee signs in with a company account, receives security settings and printers from the domain or from Microsoft Intune, and carries a laptop whose system drive is encrypted with BitLocker. If the laptop is lost, its recovery key is stored in Active Directory or Entra ID, so the IT team can still unlock the drive.
Technical staff gain even more. A support technician starts a Hyper-V virtual machine to reproduce a problem on an older Windows version or a Linux distribution, or opens Windows Sandbox to test an unknown installer in a disposable environment that is wiped on closing. Remote workers use the built-in Remote Desktop host to reach their office PC from home, and small IT service providers use Group Policy to apply identical settings to every client.
BitLocker encrypts complete system and data drives, and BitLocker To Go extends this protection to USB sticks and external disks, which matters whenever devices carry customer data. Hyper-V is a type-1 hypervisor, meaning it runs directly on the hardware beneath Windows, and it shares its technology with Windows Server. Checkpoints let you roll a virtual machine back after a failed update, while Windows Sandbox handles quick throwaway tests.
For central management, the system can enrol in Intune or another device management service and be deployed with Windows Autopilot, so new laptops ship straight to employees and configure themselves at first sign-in. Update policies let administrators defer feature updates and schedule quality updates, preventing unplanned changes on machines that must stay stable. Assigned Access turns a PC into a single-app kiosk for reception desks or production terminals.
Windows 11 Home suits private users but lacks Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, the Remote Desktop host, Group Policy and organisational domain membership, which makes it a weak choice for business PCs. Pro for Workstations builds on Pro with features for demanding hardware, including the ReFS file system, SMB Direct for faster network transfers and persistent memory support, which mainly benefits engineering, rendering and data analysis. Enterprise adds protections such as Credential Guard plus advanced management and targets organisations with their own IT department. For offices, freelancers and experienced home users, Pro offers the most sensible balance.
This edition is an operating system only and does not include Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 apps, which are licensed separately. Its Remote Desktop host accepts one remote session at a time and locks the local screen during it, so it cannot replace a terminal server for several simultaneous users. Credential Guard and the creation of ReFS volumes remain reserved for higher editions. During first setup, the personal path expects a Microsoft account and an internet connection, while the work or school path joins your organisation's directory instead.
Can an existing Windows 11 Home installation be upgraded to Pro?
Yes. The switch happens in place, so the additional features become available without reinstalling, and programs and personal files stay untouched.
Is the Pro edition worth it for a single private user?
It is if you want BitLocker, virtual machines, a sandbox for testing or remote access to your PC. Pro adds no gaming or multimedia features, so Home is sufficient for browsing, media and games.
Can it be installed on a new PC without an operating system?
Yes. Microsoft's Media Creation Tool creates a bootable USB stick from which the Pro edition installs onto an empty drive. The installed edition can afterwards be checked under Settings, System, About.
