Windows 11 Home OEM is Microsoft's operating system for private desktops and laptops, intended for clean installation on a new or rebuilt PC.
This is the Home edition of Windows 11, Microsoft's current operating system for desktop PCs and laptops, supplied in the OEM form that Microsoft provides to system builders. It is the entry level of the Windows 11 family, below Windows 11 Pro and Pro for Workstations, and it contains the full interface, the built-in security features and the gaming technologies, while leaving out the management tools that businesses use.
The OEM package is meant for a newly assembled or freshly set up computer rather than an in-place upgrade. Typical buyers build their own PC, replace a failed system drive or prepare a refurbished machine and want a clean installation. A new setup starts on the current release and then receives security and quality updates through Windows Update.
On a private computer the system carries everything else: the browser, an office package, photo libraries, games and the phone next to the keyboard. A typical session begins with a Windows Hello sign-in by face, fingerprint or PIN, continues with two or three programs arranged side by side through Snap Layouts, and may end with a game started from the Xbox app. Phone Link shows messages and notifications from an Android phone or iPhone on the desktop.
Parents use Microsoft Family Safety to set screen time limits and content filters for children's accounts. Students and home office users keep coursework and private tasks apart on separate virtual desktops, and the Snipping Tool records short screen videos as well as screenshots. Hobby programmers can add the Windows Subsystem for Linux, which runs a distribution such as Ubuntu next to normal Windows programs and is available in Home as well as Pro.
Protection is active from the first start. Windows Security, built on Microsoft Defender Antivirus, handles malware scanning, the firewall and ransomware protection for selected folders. Device encryption secures the system drive on many current laptops once the user signs in with a Microsoft account, which matters if a notebook is lost. Smart App Control adds a further layer by blocking applications that Microsoft's cloud service classifies as untrusted or unsigned.
For gaming, DirectStorage moves game data from a fast NVMe drive to the graphics card more efficiently and shortens loading times in titles that support it. Auto HDR adds high dynamic range to many older DirectX games on an HDR monitor. The Xbox app and Game Bar provide PC Game Pass access, recording and performance overlays without extra tools, and Snap Groups restore a saved set of windows in one click.
Home is designed for private use. Windows 11 Pro adds BitLocker drive encryption, Hyper-V virtual machines, Windows Sandbox, incoming Remote Desktop connections, the Group Policy Editor and joining an Active Directory domain or Microsoft Entra ID. Pro for Workstations extends Pro for high-end workstation hardware. For a gaming PC, a family computer or a student laptop, Home offers the same interface, apps and gaming performance as Pro, and it can be upgraded to Pro later without reinstalling.
This edition cannot join a company domain and cannot be administered through Group Policy, so it does not suit a PC managed by a corporate IT department. Remote Desktop works only outward: you can connect from this computer to another one, but nobody can connect into it. Setup requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account. As an OEM product, it is aimed at people who install and maintain their own system, and Microsoft refers support for OEM copies to the system builder.
Does the OEM version have fewer features than the retail box?
No. The operating system, its features and its updates are identical. The difference lies in packaging and intended use.
Is Microsoft Office included?
No, Office and Microsoft 365 are separate products. Windows does include Microsoft Edge, Notepad, Paint, Photos and the Clipchamp video editor.
Will my Windows 10 programs still run?
Most desktop programs written for Windows 10 run unchanged, because both systems share the same application platform. For older printers, scanners or other special hardware, check whether the manufacturer offers a Windows 11 driver.
