Its feature set corresponds to Windows 11, version 24H2, and it succeeds Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021. What separates it from regular Windows is the servicing model: the system receives monthly quality and security updates, but no feature updates that would change its behaviour or interface.

Microsoft positions the LTSC edition for special-purpose devices rather than for every PC in an organisation. Typical examples are machines with one important task, such as a production line controller, a laboratory workstation or a medical device. There, a predictable platform matters more than new functions, because every operating system change would require new testing or certification.

How it is used in everyday work

This edition is rarely chosen for a single desk PC. An IT department usually builds it once into a reference image and deploys it to a defined group of devices. A typical sequence starts with a clean installation, followed by drivers, the one or two line-of-business applications the device exists for, a hardening baseline and, where needed, a locked-down user interface. After acceptance testing the image is rolled out, and from that point the devices only take cumulative quality updates.

The roles that benefit most are system integrators, production and OT teams, laboratory administrators and vendors who deliver a PC as part of a larger machine or appliance. For them the main gain is that a validated configuration stays valid: menus, settings and application behaviour remain exactly as they were at approval, and operators need no retraining after Windows releases.

The functions that make a practical difference

Security is where LTSC 2024 differs most clearly from the 2021 release. Credential Guard is enabled by default and uses virtualisation-based security to isolate sign-in secrets, which protects against credential theft techniques such as pass-the-hash. Windows LAPS manages and rotates the local administrator password automatically and can now create and rename the managed account itself, which avoids identical admin passwords across a fleet. App Control for Business lets administrators define precisely which code may run.

For device control, Restricted User Experience, previously called multi-app kiosk mode, presents a curated desktop with only the programs a station needs, with newer policies to trim the Start menu and taskbar. On the network side, SMB signing is now required by default, encryption can be enforced for all outgoing SMB connections, and NTLM can be blocked for SMB traffic. Checkpoint cumulative updates keep monthly packages smaller for sites with limited bandwidth.

Choosing the right edition

The regular Windows 11 Enterprise edition follows the General Availability Channel and receives a new feature update every year, which suits office PCs that should keep pace with new functions and current applications. The LTSC 2024 edition freezes the feature set and follows Microsoft's Fixed Lifecycle Policy with five years of fixes and security patches. Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 shares the same release base, is aimed at embedded and dedicated hardware supplied through device manufacturers, and has a ten-year servicing period. Windows 11 Pro lacks enterprise security functions such as Credential Guard and suits smaller environments without these requirements.

Practical limits worth knowing before you buy

Because the feature set is frozen, functions that Microsoft adds to Windows 11 after version 24H2 will not appear on this edition; they arrive only with a later LTSC release. Microsoft also points out that apps and tools designed for the General Availability Channel, including in-box apps and the Microsoft Store, may have limited support, and in-box apps that are developed further are not part of the edition. Before ordering, confirm that your line-of-business software explicitly supports LTSC and that the device needs nothing beyond it.

Internet Explorer is no longer available in this release. Websites or machine interfaces that still depend on it can be opened in Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge.
