Microsoft Windows 11 Enterprise at a glance

This edition is the version of Windows 11 that Microsoft builds for organisations whose PCs are deployed, secured and updated by an IT department. It sits above Windows 11 Pro and contains every Pro capability, including BitLocker, Hyper-V, Remote Desktop host, domain join and Group Policy. On top of that it adds security and management controls that Pro does not offer, aimed at companies that need to protect user credentials against modern attack techniques.

Enterprise is less about new applications and more about control. The desktop, File Explorer and the included apps look the same as on Pro, so staff need no retraining. What changes is what administrators can enforce: how sign-in secrets are stored, which software may run, how much diagnostic data leaves the device and how the consumer side of Windows behaves on business machines.

How it is used in everyday work

For the employee, a working day on an Enterprise PC looks unremarkable, and that is intentional. They sign in with Windows Hello or a smart card, open business applications, connect to file shares and join meetings while the protections run underneath without prompts. The real work happens on the administrator side, where policies are defined once and distributed to many devices through Active Directory Group Policy, Microsoft Intune or Configuration Manager.

A typical IT sequence is to build a reference configuration, test it with a pilot group and then roll it out through Windows Autopilot or a classic imaging process. Security teams in regulated sectors such as finance, healthcare and public administration benefit most, because they must show auditors that credentials are isolated, application control is enforced and data collection is limited. Smaller firms without central management gain less, since most of the value appears once devices are managed.

The functions that make a practical difference

The most frequently cited reason to choose Enterprise is Credential Guard. It uses virtualization-based security to keep NTLM hashes and Kerberos tickets in an isolated environment that the regular operating system cannot read, which blocks the credential-dumping tools used in pass-the-hash attacks. Microsoft enables it by default on suitable devices running current versions. Personal Data Encryption ties the content of protected folders to the user's Windows Hello sign-in, so those files stay unreadable until that specific person has authenticated.

App Control for Business and AppLocker let administrators define which programs, scripts and installers may start, a practical defence against ransomware launched from a download folder. In privacy-sensitive environments, the diagnostic data setting can be switched off entirely, an option Pro lacks, and Microsoft consumer experiences such as suggested apps can be disabled by policy. Each annual feature update also receives 36 months of servicing instead of the 24 months that apply to Pro, giving IT teams more time to test before upgrading.

Choosing the right edition

Windows 11 Pro suits small businesses that need BitLocker, domain join and Group Policy but not credential isolation or Personal Data Encryption. Pro for Workstations targets high-end hardware with features such as the ReFS file system and persistent memory support, rather than fleet security. Windows 11 Education shares most Enterprise capabilities but is reserved for schools and universities. Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC is a separate product without annual feature updates and with fewer inbox apps, intended for fixed-function systems such as medical devices or production controllers. The standard Enterprise edition fits organisations that want current Windows features together with the full set of built-in protections Microsoft provides for office PCs.

Practical limits worth knowing before you buy

Several capabilities often associated with Enterprise are not part of the operating system itself. Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, Intune, Windows Autopatch and Universal Print are separate cloud services with their own subscriptions. Credential Guard also changes the behaviour of older protocols: once it is active, NTLMv1, MS-CHAPv2, Digest authentication and saved CredSSP credentials can no longer use single sign-on, so legacy VPN or Wi-Fi setups that rely on them should be tested first. A single unmanaged home PC gains little over Pro.

Common questions before ordering

Will users notice a difference compared with Windows 11 Pro?
The interface, apps and file handling are identical, so people work exactly as before. The differences are policies and protections that run in the background under the control of IT.

Is this the same product as the LTSC version?
No. The standard edition receives a new feature update every year and includes the usual inbox apps. LTSC stays on a fixed feature set and is aimed at specialised devices.

Does it work with our existing Active Directory and Group Policy?
Yes. The edition supports classic domain join and Group Policy as well as Microsoft Entra ID join with management through Intune or Configuration Manager. It therefore fits on-premises, cloud and hybrid environments.
