Microsoft Windows 10 Pro at a glance

This is the professional edition of Windows 10, the desktop operating system Microsoft developed through regular feature updates up to version 22H2, the final release of the platform. It sits above Windows 10 Home and below the Enterprise and Education editions, and Microsoft aims it at small businesses, freelancers and technically demanding home users. Microsoft no longer adds new features to Windows 10, so what this edition offers today is a stable, fully known feature set.

Compared with Home, the Pro edition adds what a PC needs inside an organisation: BitLocker drive encryption, a Remote Desktop host, the Hyper-V virtualisation platform, Group Policy and joining to an Active Directory domain or Microsoft Entra ID. Interface, Microsoft Store, Windows Security and app compatibility match Home, so the difference lies in control, protection and administration rather than in the look of the desktop.

How it is used in everyday work

A typical installation is an office or home-office PC that has to fit into existing infrastructure. An administrator joins the machine to the company domain or Microsoft Entra ID, after which staff sign in with company accounts and policies arrive automatically. BitLocker is then switched on so that a lost laptop does not expose client files, with the recovery key stored in the directory or the user's Microsoft account.

The Remote Desktop host covers a common small-office need: an employee working from home connects over the company VPN to the office workstation and uses its applications and files as if sitting in front of it. Developers and testers run separate virtual machines in Hyper-V for legacy software or test setups, while Windows Sandbox offers a disposable desktop for trying an unknown installer without touching the main system.

The functions that make a practical difference

Group Policy is the main administrative difference from Home. Through the local editor or a domain controller, password rules, access to removable drives, update behaviour and desktop restrictions are set once and enforced on every PC instead of being configured by hand. Windows Update for Business adds control over timing, so patches can be deferred and tested on a few machines before reaching every desk.

BitLocker To Go extends encryption to USB sticks and external drives, useful for anyone carrying project data between sites; Home can open such drives but cannot encrypt new ones. Assigned Access locks a PC to a single app, a straightforward way to set up a reception terminal, an information screen or a shared shop computer. The edition can also be enrolled in Microsoft Intune or a comparable management platform and administered alongside phones and laptops.

Choosing the right edition

Windows 10 Home covers private use but cannot host Remote Desktop sessions, join a domain or apply Group Policy, and it lacks full BitLocker management. Pro for Workstations builds on this edition with the ReFS file system, SMB Direct for faster network file sharing and support for persistent memory, features aimed at engineering and media workstations. Enterprise and Education add protections such as Credential Guard and target organisations with their own IT department and centrally managed fleets. For a single business PC, a small office or a demanding home setup, Pro is the level that fits.

Practical limits worth knowing before you buy

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025, so version 22H2 receives no new features. Security patches now come only through the Extended Security Updates programme. The consumer variant runs until 12 October 2027, but Microsoft excludes PCs joined to a domain or Microsoft Entra ID or enrolled in device management; such business machines need the paid commercial ESU offer. Anyone buying this edition for a managed office should budget for that or plan a move to Windows 11. It is also worth confirming that critical business software still supports Windows 10.

Common questions before ordering

Can an existing Windows 10 Home installation be upgraded to this edition?
Yes. The Pro key is entered in the Settings app under Change product key, and Windows converts the existing installation without a reinstall. Programs, settings and personal files stay in place, and the additional functions become available after a restart.

Is a later move to Windows 11 possible?
Microsoft offers the upgrade from this edition to Windows 11 Pro free of charge through Windows Update on eligible PCs, keeping the Pro feature set. Whether a given PC qualifies can be checked in advance with Microsoft's free PC Health Check app.

Does the Pro edition include Microsoft Office?
No. Word, Excel, Outlook and the other Office applications are sold separately and are not part of any Windows edition. Windows itself includes Edge, Notepad, Paint and Windows Security.
