Ten extra core licences for Windows Server 2025 Datacenter, used when a host has more physical cores than its existing base licence covers.
This add-on consists of ten additional core licences that belong to the Datacenter edition of Windows Server 2025, the highest on-premises edition of Microsoft's current server operating system. It contains no separate software and instead extends an existing Datacenter base licence so that a server with more physical processor cores than the base covers can be licensed completely and according to Microsoft's licensing terms.
Windows Server 2025 is licensed per physical core. Microsoft requires every physical core in a server to be licensed, with a minimum of eight core licences per processor and sixteen per server. A Datacenter base licence typically covers exactly that sixteen-core floor, while current server processors frequently exceed it. This pack closes the gap, for example on a host with 26 physical cores, where the base licence and these ten core licences together cover the entire machine.
A core licence is not something you open like an application, so the everyday context is the server it covers. Typical Datacenter hosts run Hyper-V with many Windows Server virtual machines, such as domain controllers, file servers and SQL Server instances, consolidated onto a few powerful machines. When such a host is replaced or fitted with processors that carry more cores, the licence count has to follow.
The add-on is usually ordered by IT administrators, system houses and managed service providers during hardware refreshes, capacity planning or preparation for a licence audit. They count the physical cores of each host, subtract the cores already covered by Datacenter licences and add core licences until every core is accounted for. Teams running clusters with Storage Spaces Direct or software-defined networking gain the most, because those functions depend on the Datacenter edition on every node.
Because the add-on extends Datacenter licensing, the relevant functions are those of the Datacenter edition, and they apply properly only once every core is covered. The most important is the virtualization right: with all physical cores licensed, Datacenter permits an unlimited number of Windows Server virtual machines and containers on that host. Storage Spaces Direct, which the Standard edition does not include, pools local drives across cluster nodes into shared, highly available storage without a separate SAN.
Datacenter also provides the Network Controller for software-defined networking and shielded virtual machines protected by the Host Guardian Service, both aimed at multi-tenant and security-sensitive environments. Storage Replica copies volumes between servers or sites for disaster recovery, without the size and partnership restrictions that apply in Standard. The 2025 release adds SMB over QUIC for secure remote file access without a VPN and an Active Directory database with a larger page size.
Microsoft offers Windows Server 2025 as Essentials, Standard, Datacenter and Datacenter: Azure Edition. Essentials targets small businesses with a single modest server and is not extended with core add-ons. Standard follows the same per-core model but grants rights to two virtual machines per fully licensed server and lacks Storage Spaces Direct and software-defined networking, which makes it a fit for physical or lightly virtualized hosts. Datacenter, which this pack extends, suits dense virtualization and clustered storage. Datacenter: Azure Edition runs only in Azure and on Azure Local.
This product is not a standalone licence. It only has value alongside a Windows Server 2025 Datacenter base licence covering at least sixteen cores, and it cannot extend a Standard licence, because all core licences on one server must be of the same edition. Core licences cover the server software only, so users or devices accessing the server additionally need Windows Server 2025 CALs. Before ordering, count physical cores per host rather than logical threads, so that the quantity matches.
Can I combine this add-on with a Standard licence?
No. Datacenter core licences only extend Datacenter coverage, and a single server cannot be licensed with a mixture of Standard and Datacenter cores. A host running Standard needs Standard additional core licences instead.
Do I still need client access licences?
Yes. Core licences permit running the server, while access by users or devices is licensed separately. The CALs must be for Windows Server 2025 or a later version, so existing 2022 CALs do not cover a 2025 server.
Does adding core licences add new features?
No, the feature set is defined by the edition, not by the number of core licences. What the add-on provides is complete coverage, so the Datacenter rights, including unlimited virtual machines, apply to the whole host.
