Microsoft PowerPoint 2019 is the standalone presentation application from Office 2019 for building, rehearsing and delivering slide shows.
This edition is Microsoft's dedicated presentation program from the Office 2019 generation. It is offered here as a single application instead of as part of a bundle such as Office Home & Student 2019. It saves in the same .pptx format used by every current PowerPoint release, so decks can be exchanged without conversion with colleagues on Office 2016, 2021, 2024 or Microsoft 365.
The job it is built for is clearly defined: creating slide decks, adding charts, media and animation, and presenting the result on a projector or second screen. Compared with the 2016 release, the 2019 version brought several tools that Microsoft had first introduced for subscribers, including the Morph transition, Zoom navigation, scalable icons, 3D models and improved pen input. Buyers who only need presentation software avoid paying for word processing and spreadsheet programs they would not use.
A typical session starts from a theme or a company template, followed by a set of slide titles that is gradually filled with text, charts copied from Excel, screenshots and short video clips. Sales teams often maintain one master pitch deck and adapt copies for individual customers. Trainers and teachers build longer decks divided into sections, which can be reordered or hidden depending on the audience.
During the talk itself, Presenter View shows the current slide, the next slide, speaker notes and a timer on the laptop, while the audience only sees the slide on the projector. Rehearsal mode records the time spent on each slide, and audio or video narration can be recorded directly into the deck together with pen annotations. Afterwards the presentation can be saved as a PDF for people who missed the meeting or do not have the program installed.
Morph is the feature most users notice first. You duplicate a slide, then move, resize or recolour objects on the copy, and the software animates the change between both slides automatically, which replaces many individual motion paths. Zoom follows a similar idea for navigation: clickable thumbnails of single slides, sections or an overview can be placed on a slide, so a presenter can jump to a topic and back without leaving the slide show when a question comes up.
The built-in icon library inserts scalable vector graphics that stay sharp at any size and can be recoloured or converted into editable shapes. 3D models can be inserted, rotated freely and combined with Morph to show an object from several angles. Pen and touch users get a pencil texture, a ruler for straight lines and a highlighter for text, and the background removal tool for photos now detects the background area automatically, so fewer manual corrections are needed.
The standalone application suits users whose work centres on presentations and who already have other tools for documents and spreadsheets. Office Home & Student 2019 contains the identical PowerPoint alongside Word and Excel, Office Home & Business 2019 adds Outlook, and Office Professional 2019 also includes Access and Publisher. If two or more of these programs are needed, one of the suites is usually the more economical purchase. PowerPoint in Microsoft 365 is a subscription product that keeps receiving new functions such as Designer layout suggestions, and the later standalone releases 2021 and 2024 contain additions made after 2019.
Microsoft ended support for Office 2019 on 14 October 2025, so the application no longer receives security fixes or quality updates. Organisations with strict IT policies should confirm that software outside the manufacturer's support lifecycle is acceptable before ordering. The feature set is also fixed: tools that Microsoft introduced later, such as Presenter Coach, live subtitles during a slide show and the AI-supported functions of Microsoft 365, are not part of this edition. Teams that depend on those functions are better served by a newer version.
Can I keep using my existing templates and older presentations?
Yes. Files in .pptx format as well as older .ppt presentations from PowerPoint 97 to 2003 open directly, and corporate templates in .potx format work as usual. Older files open in compatibility mode until they are converted to the current format.
Will colleagues with newer versions be able to edit my files?
They can open and edit them without conversion, since all current versions share the same file format. In the other direction, presentations built in Microsoft 365 generally open in this edition too, although effects introduced after 2019 may appear simplified or cannot be edited.
Can a presentation be exported as a video?
Yes. The export function creates an MP4 or WMV file in resolutions up to 4K Ultra HD, including recorded timings, narration and ink annotations. This is practical for training material or for publishing a talk on an internal video platform.
