Work then moves into Word for contracts and reports, and into Excel for budgets or monthly figures.

Controllers and back-office staff tend to spend most of their time in Excel, where the new text functions help clean up exported data, for example by splitting a column of full addresses into separate fields. Sales and training teams build customer presentations and internal briefings in PowerPoint, and the Recording Studio turns a finished deck into a narrated video for people who missed the meeting. OneNote collects meeting minutes and project notes in one notebook.

The functions that make a practical difference

Microsoft added fourteen text and array functions to Excel in this release. They split strings at a delimiter and stack or reshape ranges, replacing many nested formulas and helper columns. Charts can now reference dynamic arrays, so a chart grows or shrinks automatically when the underlying result changes size. The IMAGE function places pictures inside cells, where they stay with their row when a table is sorted or filtered.

Word now restores the whole session after an unexpected shutdown, reopening every document that was open so that unsaved changes can be recovered. PowerPoint adds cameo, which places a live camera feed on a slide as a formattable object, and closed captions for embedded video and audio. Continuity Camera lets you take a photo with an iPhone or iPad and insert it directly into a document, workbook or presentation. Support for OpenDocument Format 1.4 helps when partners save their files in ODF.

Choosing the right edition

Microsoft offers three Office 2024 editions for the Mac. Office Home 2024 contains Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote and is aimed at private users and students. Office Home & Business 2024 adds Outlook and is licensed for commercial use, which makes it a common choice for freelancers and very small companies. The Standard edition covers the same applications but belongs to the commercial LTSC line, which organisations choose when they want an unchanging version across their Macs. Mixed environments can pair it with Office LTSC Standard 2024 or Professional Plus 2024 on Windows.

Practical limits worth knowing before you buy

The suite contains no Access, because Microsoft does not offer its database application for macOS in any edition, and Publisher is no longer part of Office 2024. Microsoft Teams is not bundled and has to be installed separately if you need it. Because the feature set is frozen, functions Microsoft later adds to Microsoft 365 will not appear here.
