What are the main benefits of CyberLink PowerDVD Ultra?

CyberLink PowerDVD Ultra is a Windows media player for Blu-ray discs, DVDs, and high-resolution video, photo, and music files. It is the top consumer edition, adding 8K, HDR, casting, VR, and cloud streaming on top of the Pro feature set.

One Library – Organizes your movies, music and photos together.
Picture Boost – TrueTheater sharpens DVDs and low-resolution video.
Disc Support – Still plays physical Blu-ray and DVD discs.
Home Casting – Sends playback to your living-room TV easily.
Offline Playback – Plays your own files without monthly streaming.

What does CyberLink PowerDVD Ultra do?

PowerDVD Ultra is a Windows media player that plays Blu-ray discs, DVDs, and digital files including 4K and 8K video. As the highest consumer edition, it adds 8K and HDR10 playback, casting to Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku and Fire TV, VR and 360° video, and CyberLink Cloud streaming that the Standard and Pro editions do not have. Its TrueTheater engine upscales and sharpens DVDs and lower-resolution clips in real time, and Instant Karaoke can strip vocals from local files or YouTube using AI. Audio support reaches up to 7.1-channel Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. In practice it suits people who keep a disc and file collection on a PC instead of relying only on streaming apps.

What is the difference between PowerDVD Standard, Pro and Ultra?

Standard plays DVDs and common video files but not Blu-ray discs, and it omits 8K, HDR, casting, and lossless surround audio. Pro adds Blu-ray disc playback, AVCHD, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio, and AI karaoke, but still has no 8K, casting, VR, or cloud streaming. Ultra is the full set: 8K and HDR10 video files, casting to TV devices, VR and 360° playback, Video Super Resolution, Blu-ray and DVD ISO playback, plus 100GB of CyberLink Cloud for one year. If you only watch DVDs, Standard is enough; if you own a Blu-ray drive, Pro or Ultra is required. The table below shows the main verified differences.

Can PowerDVD Ultra still play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs?

No. CyberLink permanently removed Ultra HD Blu-ray disc ("UHD BD") playback, and its support pages confirm UHD BD disc playback is no longer possible on Windows PCs as of April 2025. The cause was Intel dropping Software Guard Extensions (SGX) from 11th-generation and newer CPUs, which PowerDVD relied on for that disc format's DRM. Ultra still plays standard 1080p Blu-ray discs, DVDs, and 4K/8K video files from your drive — only the physical UHD Blu-ray disc format is affected. If playing 4K movie discs is your main reason to buy, PowerDVD is not the right tool.

Does PowerDVD Ultra work on Mac?

No. PowerDVD is a Windows-only program, and CyberLink does not ship a current Mac edition; it runs on Windows 11, 10, and 8.1. Mac users who want Blu-ray, DVD, or local 4K/8K playback need a different player entirely, and there is no Linux build either. Before buying for disc playback, confirm you are on a Windows PC with a compatible optical drive, since the drive is not included. This Windows focus is also why TrueTheater hardware acceleration is tuned around Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD graphics on PC.

Which video and audio formats does PowerDVD Ultra support?

Ultra plays virtually all common containers — MKV, MP4, MOV, FLV, and 3GPP — and codecs including HEVC (H.265), H.264/AVC, and XAVC-S up to 8K. On the audio side it handles Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, DSD, and lossless FLAC, ALAC, and APE at up to 7.1 channels. It can also extract audio from video and convert clips to MP4, AAC, or MP3 for mobile devices. HEVC and 8K playback are Ultra-only, since the Pro edition drops both. That format breadth is why it is often used as a single player for a mixed disc-and-file library rather than several separate apps.

What should users check before choosing PowerDVD Ultra?

First confirm you are on Windows, because there is no Mac or Linux version. Second, do not buy it expecting to play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs — that feature is discontinued, though standard Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K/8K files still work. Third, if you only want Blu-ray disc playback at the lowest price, Pro already includes it, so Ultra is worth the difference mainly for 8K, HDR, casting, VR, and cloud streaming. For any disc playback you also need a compatible optical drive, which the software does not provide. Match the edition to whether you actually use discs, casting, and high-resolution files.

Frequently asked questions about CyberLink PowerDVD Ultra

Does PowerDVD Ultra include CyberLink Cloud storage?

Yes. The Ultra edition includes 100GB of CyberLink Cloud storage for one year, which lets you stream your own media to a PC, web browser, or mobile device. The Standard and Pro editions do not include cloud storage.

Can PowerDVD Ultra play Blu-ray and DVD ISO files?

Yes. Ultra plays both Blu-ray ISO and DVD ISO disc-image files directly from your hard drive. The Standard and Pro editions do not support ISO playback, so this is an Ultra-specific capability.

Does PowerDVD Ultra support 3D Blu-ray playback?

No. CyberLink discontinued all 3D playback — including Blu-ray 3D and TrueTheater 3D — in versions released after April 2020. Current editions, Ultra included, play 2D content only.
