What is included in Kaspersky Small Office Security?

Cloud management portal – KSOS Portal adds devices, pushes updates and shows alerts.
Endpoint anti-malware – Real-time protection against malware, phishing, ransomware and zero-day attacks.
Windows file server protection – Covers Windows file servers, not only user workstations.
Mobile device protection – Android and iOS devices join the same portal.
Backup and password tools – Encrypted backup, password manager and Safe Money checkout protection.
Important – No EDR component; that needs Kaspersky Next EDR Foundations.

What are the main benefits of Kaspersky Small Office Security?

Kaspersky Small Office Security is an all-in-one protection suite for small teams, administered through the cloud-based KSOS Portal rather than an on-premises management server. It sits below the Kaspersky Next line in the same vendor portfolio, which is where buyers move when they need EDR.

No IT staff needed – Setup wizards and preset policies replace manual admin configuration.
One dashboard – Device status, alerts and updates sit in one place.
Mixed fleet coverage – Windows, macOS, Android and iOS use the same portal.
Server coverage – Windows file server protection sits in the same console.
Phishing and payments – Link checking and Safe Money protect online banking sessions.
Fast rollout – One invite link enrols each team member's devices.

Which company size is Kaspersky Small Office Security suitable for?

The product targets offices without a dedicated administrator, where someone handles IT alongside another job. The decisive limit is not the number of people but whether anyone outside the company demands detection evidence you cannot produce from an antivirus console.

Does Kaspersky Small Office Security meet the requirements of Swiss cybersecurity legislation?

No security product makes a company compliant, and this one is no exception. The revised Information Security Act (ISG) obliges operators of critical infrastructure — energy and water supply, transport, healthcare, finance, telecommunications and cantonal and communal administrations among them — to report a cyberattack to the Federal Office for Cybersecurity (BACS) within 24 hours of discovery, with a further period to complete an incomplete first report. Most small offices fall outside that group, so the practical question is whether a customer or an insurer expects comparable evidence from you anyway. What the product supports concretely: the KSOS Portal records detections with a timestamp and the affected device, which is the minimum you need to describe an incident in a first report. What it does not cover: there is no extended telemetry retention, no root-cause reconstruction and no forensic timeline, so the question of how an attacker got in cannot be answered from this console. This text is general product information and not legal advice.

Does Kaspersky Small Office Security meet the requirements of European cybersecurity legislation?

No product creates NIS 2 compliance, because the directive addresses organisational measures and processes rather than software features. NIS 2 requires categories of measures including risk analysis and security policies, incident handling, business continuity and backup management, supply chain security, basic cyber hygiene and training, and access control including authentication practices. Kaspersky Small Office Security supports several of these categories directly: malware and phishing protection as basic hygiene, encrypted backup as a continuity measure, vulnerability scanning of installed software, and password management as an access control aid. It does not cover incident handling beyond alerting, and it produces no centralised log export for a SIEM, no directory integration, no role-based administrator separation and no patch deployment with reporting. Those gaps are the ones auditors ask about first, and they need either a higher product tier or a separate process.

What should you know about official assessments of Kaspersky?

Two official positions are relevant and both are still in force. The US Department of Commerce, through its Bureau of Industry and Security, issued a Final Determination on 20 June 2024 prohibiting Kaspersky from providing anti-virus software and cybersecurity services in the United States; signature and codebase updates for US customers stopped on 29 September 2024, and resale or integration of the software there is prohibited. The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) issued a warning against Kaspersky anti-virus products in March 2022 and confirmed after the US measure that the warning stands, while stating that a sales ban is not being pursued in Germany. In Switzerland, BACS has issued neither a warning nor a ban and has stated that its technical assessment is unchanged and that no misuse of the software in Switzerland has been reported to it. Kaspersky rejects the allegations, states that it does not engage in activities threatening national security, and has described the US decision as based on the geopolitical climate rather than a technical evaluation of its products. Independent laboratory testing of Kaspersky products has continued in Europe and is not affected by the US measure. In practice this matters most to buyers with US business ties, public sector contracts, or supply chain questionnaires that ask about vendor origin; for a Swiss or EU company without those constraints, it is a procurement decision rather than a legal obstacle.

Does Kaspersky Small Office Security help with security questionnaires from large customers?

Partly, and it is worth knowing in advance which lines you will leave blank. It answers the questions on deployed endpoint protection, coverage of workstations, mobile devices and file servers, central administration of that protection, backup of business data in encrypted form, password handling, and — in the Premium tier — documented security awareness training. It does not answer questions on endpoint detection and response, log retention periods, SIEM integration, patch management with evidence, full disk encryption with central key recovery, role-based administrative access, or directory-based user provisioning. Two of these gaps also appear in the vendor origin section of many questionnaires, so read that part before you commit. Where the gaps block a deal, moving up to Kaspersky Next EDR Foundations within the same vendor family is usually cheaper and faster than running two vendors side by side, because the agent and the console change once rather than twice.

What is the difference between Kaspersky Small Office Security and Kaspersky Small Office Security Premium?

The decisive difference is human support, not protection technology: both tiers use the same protection components, and Premium adds guided installation by Kaspersky specialists, priority support access, and security awareness training delivered through the Kaspersky Automated Security Awareness Platform. If you have someone who can install software and read an alert, the base tier covers the same threats. If your questionnaire or insurer asks for documented employee training, the training module in Premium is the reason to choose it. Neither tier includes an EDR component.

Which limitations should you know before buying?

The clearest regional limitation is the United States: sale, resale and update delivery there have been prohibited since the Commerce Department measure took full effect on 29 September 2024, so a company with US entities cannot standardise on this product across all sites. Platform coverage is Windows, macOS, Android and iOS on endpoints and Windows file servers on the server side; Linux servers and Exchange or other mail servers are not covered, which is the most frequent reason for a follow-up purchase. Management runs exclusively through the cloud-based KSOS Portal, so there is no on-premises console option for organisations that require local administration. Vulnerability scanning flags outdated software but does not deploy patches or produce patch evidence for an audit. The single most common upgrade trigger is a customer or insurer asking for detection and response capability, which means moving to the Kaspersky Next line rather than adding a module here.

Frequently asked questions about Kaspersky Small Office Security

Is an on-premises management server required?

No. Administration runs entirely through the cloud-based KSOS Portal, where devices are added, updates are pushed and alerts are reviewed. There is no local management server to install or maintain for this product.

Does it replace a separate password manager for the team?

Kaspersky Password Manager is part of the package and is administered from the same portal as the endpoint protection. For a small office that currently keeps credentials in a spreadsheet or a browser, this removes one separate tool and one separate invoice.
